Evelyn H. Rice, 83, of South Sioux City, formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Daniel Anderson of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be later this summer in Walthill, Neb. Visitation with the family present will be 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Evelyn H. Rice was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Winnebago, Neb., to Joseph D. and Hazel C. (Lucart) Wilcox. She married Sgt. John R. Rice on Valentine's Day in 1945. He died Sept. 6, 1950, while serving with the U.S. Army near the village of Tabu-Dong, Korea.

A hero to her family and friends, she was an independent woman of strong moral values and great courage. Her efforts to challenge ethnic discrimination of the 1950s resulted in three appearances at the United States Supreme Court. She was generous and concerned for the well being of others and her home was a gathering place for great friends, food and family.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Pam and Gary Goodwin of Westminster, Colo., and Jean and Harold LaMere of South Sioux City; a son and his wife, Timothy and Kathie Rice of Omaha; a brother and his wife, Wallace and Beverly Wilcox; a sister, Thelma Rice; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Rice; a brother, Harold Wilcox; and a sister, Vivian Dains.

Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons, Scott, John and Russ Goodwin, Mike and Chris Lambertsen, David LaChapelle, T.J. Rice and Dan LaMere.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
