OTO, Iowa -- Vincent J. O'Connell, 85, of Oto died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto, with Monsignor Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m today, with the family present after 6 p.m., a vigil wake service at 7 p.m. following by a Knights of Columbus rosary, all at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Vincent Jeffrey O'Connell was born Nov. 19, 1919, northwest of Oto, the son of Jeffrey and Elva (Gothier) O'Connell. He lived in the Anthon-Oto area all of his life. He attended rural school, Anthon St. Joseph's Catholic School and Oto Public School, graduating from Oto High School in 1936. He attended college in Cedar Falls, Iowa, then returned home and farmed with his family.

He married Doris E. McElrath on April 17, 1941, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto. They worked hard at their farming operations, raising crops and livestock. The couple moved into Oto and enjoyed their retirement years taking care of their home, yard, garden and dancing and traveling. He especially enjoyed his trips to Canada, fishing with family and friends and the time spent hunting turkey and deer. The couple enjoyed spending lots of time with their families, near and far. Doris passed away Nov. 29, 2000.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus, receiving the Fourth Degree in 2002. He was a hard worker with 4-H and the Woodbury County Fair. He also served on the Oto town council.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Marcia and Ray Brown of Sioux City, Dennis and Linda O'Connell of Upland, Calif., and Bill and Nancy O'Connell of Anthon; grandchildren and spouses, Steve and Michelle Brown of Omaha, Brenda and Tom Kellen of Kremmling, Colo., Christy Brown and fiance, Andy Sweany of Portland, Ore., Amy and Matt Kirby of Tempe, Ariz., Stacy O'Connell and friend, Lucas Etheredge of Fredericksburg, Texas, Jennifer and Jarrett Beeson of Correctionville, Iowa, and Eric and Jennifer O'Connell of Anthon; great-grandchildren, Camille and Alec Brown, Benjamin Kellen, Carina and Ciera Kirby, Kaleb and William O'Connell, Brennan Hoaglund, Justin and Isaac Beeson and Tyler, Cameron and Hannah O'Connell; a brother-in-law, Francis Kirsch of Holly Springs, Iowa; and many extended family members and friends.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Pauline Kirsch.

Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and their spouses
