George Katres, 89, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

There will be no services. Private graveside services will be at a later date in Floyd Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Katres was born May 26, 1915, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Gust and Jennie (Kelepouris) Katres. He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City. In 1941, he graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in engineering. He worked for General Motors, Pontiac Division, Pontiac, Mich., prior to being called to active duty. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and served 25 years in the Air Force Reserves, achieving the rank of Lt. Col.

He married Jennie H. Staszewsky on June 16, 1941, in Kansas City, Kan. After 60 years of marriage, Jennie preceded him in death on July 18, 2001, in Sioux City.

He was a lifetime resident of Sioux City. From 1948 to 1956, he owned and operated Television Engineering in Sioux City. In 1956, he worked for the Sioux City Foundry, retiring from there in 1983.

He enjoyed horse racing, dog racing, playing cards, golf and gardening.

Survivors include a son, Stephen Katres of Sioux City; a daughter, Roberta Irion of Cape Coral, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Janice Katres of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Helen "Elaine" Paul of Kearney, Neb., Mary Katres of Los Angeles, Calif., and Pauline Kumpis of St. Louis, Mo.; three grandchildren, Todd Katres and his wife, Irene of Gibsonia, Pa., Tanya and her husband, Darryl Ashe of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jennifer Katres of Kailua, Hawaii; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gust and Jennie; his wife, Jennie; a son, Michael Katres; two brothers, Stanley and James Katres; and a son-in-law, James Irion.
