Vera Lucille Longie of Devil's Lake, N.D., formerly of Sioux City, passed away March 6, 2005, in Devil's Lake.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Steinbeck's in Sioux City.

She was born to Charles and Mary Beatrice Lewis on Sept. 24, 1919, in Sioux City.

She married Carl Becker in 1939. They had four children together, Judith, Carleen, Danny and Larry. This marriage lasted until 1962. In 1967, she married Joe Longie. They had one son, Joseph Longie. She spent her life working in the food industry. Her very favorite things to do always centered on her family. She loved playing cards with her grandsons and she played for keeps. She was a poet who played the harmonica. She loved to gamble, camp, rummage and read books.

Most of all she loved our "family functions." She loved being the center of attention to read her latest poem or tell her latest story or joke. Our family functions will never be the same without her.

She is survived by her husband; a sister, Ruth; a brother, Raymond; four children; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Betty; a brother, Paul; and a son, Larry.

She was something special to everyone who knew her.

"She was one of a kind."
