Karla Leigh Embrock, 26, of Sioux City, formerly of Hawarden, Iowa, lost her battle with melanoma (skin cancer) and died at her home Friday, July 7, 2006, surrounded by her family and in the care of Hospice.

LeRoy Seuntjens officiating, followed by visitation with the family until 8:30 p.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden.

Karla was born Nov. 18, 1979, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the daughter of James Lee and Suzanne (Reilly) Hansen. She attended West Sioux Community School in Hawarden, where she was a cheerleader, involved in chorus, swing choir and track. She graduated with honors in 1998.

She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Scott Matthew Embrock, on June 7, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden. Scott's care of Karla during her illness the past few months spoke volumes of his abiding and powerful love.

Karla was diagnosed with melanoma in June 1998. She underwent surgery and treatment for one year and remained cancer-free for 7-plus years. She attended Southwest State University in Marshall, Minn., graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education with a math concentration.

Karla's passion was dancing; she started ballet at age 3 and continued through high school. She was on the SSU Impact Performance dance team and taught dance at "Just for Kix." During college, she and Scott were resident assistants and made many lasting friendships. They also took a global studies class together and went on a college trip to Ireland in 2000. She was a member of the SSU Homecoming Royalty in 2002.

In 2003 after graduating, Karla and Scott moved to Willmar, Minn., where Scott taught social studies at the junior high school and Karla substitute taught. In 2004-05, she became the Catholic Formation Coordinator for the Church of Saint Mary's in Willmar. In the fall of 2005, they moved to Sioux City and Karla was the middle school math teacher at Mater Dei and Scott teaching at North High School. Karla loved the students at Mater Dei and was so very happy to be a part of the Sioux City Catholic school system.

On Nov. 4, 2005, they joyfully announced the birth of their son, Adam Scott, a true blessing from God.

During Karla's life, she was involved in Relay for Life and, in 2000, Karla was the honorary co-chair for the Sioux County Relay for Life. She was a strong advocate of sunscreen and skin cancer awareness. Karla's faith in God sustained her during life.

Survivors include her husband, Scott and their son, Adam; her parents, James and Suzanne Hansen of Hawarden; a sister, Kelly Doty and her husband, Kyle of St. Louis Park, Minn.; a brother, Kyle of Hawarden; uncles and aunts, Marti and Mary Jo Reilly of Sioux City, Bob and Cheryl Reilly of Spokane, Wash., Jeff and Vicki Hansen of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Matthew Scheer of Hornick, Iowa.
