Norbert J. "Norb" Nixa, 84, of Sioux City passed away Monday, July 10, 2006, at a local nursing home.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Dan Guenther officiating. Burial of the ashes will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Norb was born June 5, 1922, in Paynesville, Minn., to Albert George "A.G." and Katherine (Hansen) Nixa. He grew up in Minnesota and attended St. John's Catholic School and graduated from Rochester High School. He then attended Rochester Junior College. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November 1940.

On Nov. 20, 1943, he married Jean Dauplaise in Pensacola, Fla., where he was stationed. He was honorably discharged in October 1946. After his discharge, the couple lived in Hawarden, Mason City and Britt, Iowa, and Rochester, Minn., before moving to Sioux City in 1957. He worked at Chris Hansen Construction until his retirement in 1991.

He was a member of the Hinton American Legion Post 477, Experimental Aviation Association, Knights of Columbus Epiphany Council 743, Sioux City Home Builders, where he served two terms as president, Sioux City Construction League, where he served as president and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Nixa; 10 children and spouses, Jeanne Johnson of Delano, Minn., David and Jill Nixa of Avon, Conn., Sandra and Terry Gernhart of Milwaukee, Wis., Kristine and Tim Brown of Clearwater, Fla., Nancy and Art Gress of Smithville, Mo., Steven and Dottie Nixa of Advance, N.C., Joan and Danny Dean of Westfield, Iowa, Mark Nixa of North Sioux City, Alan and Fawn Nixa of Henniker, N.H., and Joseph and Cindy Nixa of Ute, Iowa; 26 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and eight brothers and sisters, Luella Tesoriero, Marcella Keller, Myrtle Fleischer, Judith Stellpflug, Arthur Nixa, Jerome Nixa, George Nixa and Robert Nixa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jerome Nixa; a son-in-law, David Johnson; three brothers, Eugene, William and Donald Nixa; a granddaughter, Sara Steinhoff; two great-granddaughters, Tori Hobbs and Chloe Fitzpatrick; and a great-grandson, Conlee Gress.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Siouxland.
