SERGEANT BLUFF -- Susan Marie Stangel, 40, of Sergeant Bluff died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital following a long and courageous battle against breast cancer.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kevin Lee officiating. Visitation will be noon until service time Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Susan was born Aug. 13, 1965, in Waconia, Minn., the daughter of Lester and Marie (Harloff) Mellstrom. She attended school in Hopkins, Minn. and graduated from Anoka High School in Minnesota. She continued her education at other institutions of higher learning. She worked in the mortgage banking industry in Minnesota and Scottsdale, Ariz., where she moved in 1995. She moved to the Sioux City area in 1996.

She was united in marriage to Jim Stangel on June 8, 1996, in Wayzata, Minn. Together, they made their home in Onawa, Iowa, where she worked in the Stangel family business. In 2002, they moved to Sergeant Bluff.

She was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church. She was a devoted mother. She enjoyed her children and their many different activities. She enjoyed decorating and organizing photography, music and traveling.

Survivors include her husband, James Stangel of Sergeant Bluff; three children, Matthew and twins, Joshua and Kate, all at home; her mother and stepfather, Marie and Larry Obermoller of Okoboji, Iowa; a brother, David Mellstrom and his fiancee, Heather Myers, of Phoenix, Ariz.; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Judy and Jerry Baker of Vale, Ore.; three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Sandy and Brad Bjerke and Carrie and James Mair, all of Boise, Idaho, and Ann and Rob Petschl of Edmonds, Wash.; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Les Mellstrom; her stepfather, Donald Schubert; and her father-in-law, Robert Stangel.
