Dale LeRoy Sherrill, 78, of Lead, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel in Lead.

Dale was born Aug. 4, 1927, in Cherokee, Iowa, to Walter and Anne Sherrill.

He married Shirley Ann Schallau on Aug. 28, 1948. They made their home in numerous states during his 18-year career as a field superintendent for Younglove Construction Co. After starting his own construction business in Sioux City for 17 years, the couple moved to the Black Hills, where they lived for the past 23 years. He started his 20-year career with the Games Fish and Park Department for the state of South Dakota.

He loved the outdoors and was in his element in the Black Hills. He was very instrumental in designing, clearing and maintaining the expansive snowmobiling trail system. The couple both touched the lives of many people with their dedicated lives. After the sudden death of his wife, Shirley, on Nov. 23, 1995, he continued his work on the trail system until retiring at the age of 75.

He is survived by a son, Dennis of Belle Fourche, S.D.; daughters and their husbands, Joy and Bernie Peterson Jr. and Jeana and Don Bailey, all of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Duane and Berniece Sherrill of Sun City, Calif.; and two sisters, Colleen Ogren of Lake City, Minn., and Beverly Harder of Quimby, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann (Schallau) Sherrill; his parents, Walter and Ann Sherrill; a brother, Junior Sherrill; and a granddaughter, Misty.
