Fort Dodge, Iowa, formerly Sioux City

Bud Estergaard, 82, of Fort Dodge, formerly of Sioux City, Hampton, Marshalltown and Ankeny, Iowa, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, at his residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge, with a lunch to follow. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Gunderson Funeral Chapel in Fort Dodge.

Charles G. "Bud" Estergaard, the son of Emil and Ruth Margaret Estergaard, was born on March 28, 1936. He attended school in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1954.

Bud was married to Donna Derochie in May 1954. Donna died in 1968. Bud married Maryann in 1972 and adopted her four children. Bud was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Bud served on the Sioux City Fire Department for 10 years. During that time, he worked on his days off at many different jobs. He painted homes, drove a cement truck, worked as a machinist, a refrigeration engineer, a tax preparer with H & R Block and owned Bud's Tax and Bookkeeping Service. He became a satellite director for H & R Block and was located in Hampton.

On March 1, 1983, he joined the Iowa Revenue Department as a revenue agent. He worked in Mason City, Marshalltown, and Des Moines and was promoted to a manager and relocated to Fort Dodge in March 1973. His last duty was as a program manager of the Advanced Collection Unit. He retired on Jan. 31, 2002. After eight months of retirement, he went back to work part-time, working at Mr. Money for six months, Iowa Auto for two years, Fort Dodge Ford for one year, Frontier Community Credit Union for 10 years and finally retired when he turned 80 years old.

Bud loved to read and work with wood. In the winter of 1991/92, he drove to his mother-in-law's farm 11 miles north of Cresco, Iowa to work with foresters, harvesting the oak, ash and cherry trees. Bud's son-in-law, Justin Rasch, hauled a semi-truck load of the wood to Bud's acreage where he stored it in a barn he built. Each time he completed a project he heard "me too" from his family and he happily built one for them. As an example; three baby cribs, 11 book cases, 15 wine valets, five toy chests and many, many more items. Bud also donated items to DSAOC and Almost Home for the auctions. Bud loved working with wood and his love could be defined with the many items he lovingly gave away.

Bud is survived by his wife, Maryann Estergaard; children, Tanya (Don) Petersen of Minneapolis, Kirk (Tammy) Estergaard of Omaha, and Lori (John) Huffstetler of Sioux City; adoptive children, Lynnae (Matt) Harvey of Fort Dodge, Cherissa (Justin) Rasch of Fort Dodge, Robyn (Blake) Messerly of Omaha, and Scott (Jody) Estergaard of Manson, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and brother, Roger (Barbara) Estergaard of Greeley, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Ruth Margaret Estergaard.

Pallbearers will be Alex Weiss, Dalton, Landon and Austin Rasch, Nathan and Adam Estergaard, Mason Messerly and Dawson Estergaard. Honorary pallbearer will be Christopher Petersen who will lead the casket.

Bud loved life.

In lieu of flowers, please donate a memorial in Bud's honor to Almost Home.
