John H. Arnold, 1857-1993

Anthon Herald, November 17, 1993

Reminiscing…Sixty Years Ago, November 15, 1933

Death claimed another of Anthon’s real old pioneers at 7 a.m. Saturday when John H. Arnold, a resident of this community the past 50 years, died of lobar pneumonia in his home on the southwest edge of town at the age of 76 years.

John H. Arnold was born July 22, 1857 at Samauk, Ill. He grew to manhood there and on Feb. 2, 1880, was married to Mary E. Stout. After living a Samauk three years, they came by train to Danbury, IA., hauling their household effects by oxen to Anthon, where Mr. Arnold purchased a farm on which he lived when his earthy life was terminated by death. At that time he farmed much of the land on which the town of Anthon now stands. The south part of town was named after him, being known as Arnold’s addition.

There were only a handful of settlers here at that time, and the Arnolds endured the hardships and privations of pioneer life with unflinching courage. Their trading in the early days was done at Danbury and Correctionville until the town of Anthon came into existence.
