Herman Balk was born on November 8, 1782 [1872] at Raunsau, Germany. In his infancy he was brought to his Lord in Holy Baptism and later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.

He came to America in May 1901. And settled in Woodbury County, where he resided for the rest of his life.

On March 21, 1917 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Johanna Balk at Salem Lutheran Church at Rock Branch. They moved to a farm southwest Moville and it was on this farm that he spent the remainder of his life and where he passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 1953 having reached the age of 80 years, 9 months and 11 days. Mr. Balk had enjoyed good health until the past three years.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he attended until the matter of health entered in.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Johanna on March 4, 1943, and one brother, Wilhelm.

Surviving children are Ella Balk, Carl Balk, Mrs. Edmund Zellmer (Emma) and Mrs. Clifford Wahlberg (Frieda) of Moville and Mrs. William Koetke (Johanna) of Kingsley, and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, August 22, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Schilling officiating. A service for the immediate family was held e home at 1:45 p.m. Interment was in Arlington Cemetery.

A ladies’ quartet composed of Mrs. Fred Bornholtz, Mrs. Wayne Bolender, Mrs. Charles Grothaus and Mrs. Alfred Cornils, with Mrs. Albert Wink as organist, sang ‘Asleep in Jesus’, ‘Heaven Is My Home’ and ‘Abide With Me’.

Pallbearers were Ed Bremer, Walter Kabisch, W.D. Marten, Alfred Cornils, Leonard Rippke and LeRoy Epling.

The McCulloch Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral.
