Funeral services held Friday for Mrs. C.R. Hess

Funeral services for Mrs. Clifford R. Hess of rural Anthon were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 25, 1972 at the Federated United Methodist Church at Moville. The Rev. Dr. John A. Dowd officiated and burial was made in Bethel cemetery, rural Anthon, under the direction of the McCulloch Funeral Home of Moville.

Mrs. Howard W. Smith, as soloist sang ‘My Faith Looks Up To Thee’. Mrs. R.E. Richards was organist.

Casketbearers were Messrs. Al Wendel, Henry Eberly, Gerald Riddle, Kenneth Schieuer, Millard Allman, Gary Michener.

Mrs. Clifford Hess, 61, died Wednesday, February 23, 1972 at a Rochester, Minn. Hospital.

The former Florence Lorraine Shoemaker, daughter of Charles E. Shoemaker and Bertha Manetta Sheets Shoemaker was born Dec. 19, 1910 at Bronson. She was a graduate of Bronson High School and attended Iowa State University at Ames. She taught school for a short period of time in Woodbury County.
Mrs. Hess was married June 6, 1934, at Bronson. The couple farmed near Kingsley, Iowa for eight years. For the last 30 years Mr. and Mrs. Hess farmed eight miles southeast of Moville.

Mrs. Hess was chairman of the Culinary department of the Woodbury County Fair and was active in several phases of the county fair. She was a former member of the fair’s board of directors.

Mrs. Hess was a member of the Federated United Methodist Church at Moville. She formerly was a member of Piero Methodist church and was a former district officer in the Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS).

Mrs. Hess was a lifetime member of the Farm Bureau and at one time she served on the bureau’s board of directors. She was awarded a lifetime membership in the 4-H Club, and she was active in the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA). Mrs. Hess was a past president of the Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) Club.

Survivors include the widower; three sons, Charles Burton of Waterloo, Iowa; Joe Edward of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and Jon Clifford of Moville; ;her mother, Mrs. Charles (Bertha) Shoemaker of Sioux City; a sister, Mrs. Elmer M (Alice) Brown of Bronson; a brother, Paul L. of Sioux City, and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father in 1933 and one daughter in infancy.
