Ex-Commander of County Legion Dies at Age 79

Chris L.J. Drevs, 79, Moville, past commander of the Woodbury County American Legion, died Sunday night at a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Drevs was county commander in 1946-47 and also held other offices in the county organization. He also was a past commander and charter member of Wink Sparks Post 303, American Legion, at Moville. Mr. Drevs was a longtime member and a former director of the Woodbury County Farm Bureau.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Federated United Methodist Church at Moville. The Rev. Dr. John A. Dowd will officiate. Military graveside’ rites will be conducted in Arlington Cemetery at Moville by members of Wink Sparks Post 303, American Legion. Burial will be under direction of McCulloch Funeral Home of Moville.

Mr. Drevs was born Feb. 5, 1892, at Minden, Iowa. He came to Woodbury County at age 6 with his parents.
He attended Moville High School. He served with the U.S. Army in World War I in France. Dr. Drevs married Beaulah Harmes Aug. 8, 1917, at Moville. The couple farmed in Moville Township for more than 40 years.

Mr. Drevs was a former Moville Township clerk and school director, superintend of the hog division of the Woodbury County Fair for many years, and a 4-H leader for eight years.

Survivors include the widow; five sons, Wilbur L. of Burbank, Calif., Kenneth L. of Sioux City, Robert M. of Moville, Howard D. of Kanawha, Iowa, and Everett E. of Estherville, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Caryl (Myrtis) Kuhlman of State Center, Iowa; a brother, William R. of Moville; and 19 grandchildren.
