Longtime Local Business Man Died on Monday

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon for Al Smith, 72, who died early Monday morning at a Sioux City hospital, where he had been a patient for about two weeks. The services were held in Trinity Lutheran Church here, with Rev. Russell Schilling, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Albert Wink was at the organ, and a trio composed of Mrs. Bud Rhue, Mrs. Ronald Clark and Mrs. Ernest Steffen sang ‘The Old Rugged Cross’ and ‘Abide With Me’.

Interment was in Arlington cemetery here, under the direction of the McCulloch Funeral Home. Pall bearers included Alert Hay, Dan Cooper, Ronald Miller, Lewis Sargent, J.E. Anderson and Chas. Bolstadt, of Knierim, Iowa. The honorary pall bearers were Earl Prodehl, Christ Petersen, Fred Bornholtz of Moville, and Fred Rizk and M. E. Sullivan of Sioux City and D.F. Stone of Ft. Dodge.

Alfred James Smith was born at Ireton, Iowa, August 3, 1883. As a young man he farmed in the vicinity of Hawarden. He was married August 31, 1904, to Miss Clara Schutt at LeMars. They made their home on a farm near Hawarden until 1910 when they moved to Hecla, South Dakota, where they continued farming for about eighteen years.

In 1928 the Smith family moved to Moville where he operated a service station until 1949. Since then he had not assumed full responsibility of the station but had continued working on a part time basis.

Mr. Smith had not been in the best of health for several years. He had been failing for about three years, prior to the final illness. Cause of death was believed due to heart trouble.

Surviving in addition to the widow, Clara, are three daughters, Mrs. Ritchie Gallagher, Moville; Mrs. Orville Lewis, living in California; Mrs. Wm. Petersen, Moville; and two sons, Roy Alfred of Glendale, California and Lester A. of Rapid City, S.D.; and four sisters, Mrs. Herman Gerber of Alton, Mrs. Arnold Coppock, LeMars, Mrs. Nick Luken, St. Joseph, Mo., and Mrs. Leslie Bowens, Maurice Iowa. There are seventeen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
