Salix, Iowa – Maxine Ida Newman, 68, of Salix died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, with the Rev. Bruce Lawler officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. at the church. Wood Funeral Home of Sloan, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Newman was born April 19, 1929, in Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Kathern (Anthony) Schlesis. She graduated from Mapleton High School in 1946.

She married James Newman on November 28, 1950, in Mapleton. The couple lived in Oklahoma before returning to Iowa in 1963. They moved to Salix in 1967.

She was employed with American Airlines and Zenith Corporation and was a waitress before becoming the Salix city clerk. She retired in 1993.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Tabernacle Society and American Legion Smith-Rhodes Post 295 Auxiliary in Sloan.

Survivors include her husband, three sons, James D. and Patricia Zeeb of San Diego, California, Jerry and his wife, Shirley of Salix and Jeff and his wife, Veronica, of Los Angeles, two daughters, Jana Newman Drew and her husband, David, and Jolene Newman Walker, all of Sioux City; nine grandchildren, Ashlee, Matthew and Jocelyn Newman, Joshua, Jessica, Jordan and Jenna Drew and Janell and Jill Walker and three sisters and their husbands, Louise and Leonard Horn of Paynesville, Minnesota, Ardis and Leonard Langel of Le Mars, Iowa and Virginia and Gilbert Hansel-Zimon of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Jack Wayne; a grandson, Tyler Newman and two brothers, William and Robert.
