Widow Pioneer Preacher Dies
Body of Mrs. Fannie Mitchell to Be Buried Here

Mrs. Fannie Mitchell, widow of Rev. Bennett Mitchell, a pioneer Methodist minister in Iowa and for many years presiding elder and official of the Sioux City district and northwest Iowa Conference, died at the home of her son, F.W. Mitchell, in Mitchell, South Dakota, Saturday, after a brief illness.

Born in Chautauqua County, New York, May 27, 1837. Mrs. Mitchell moved to Ambrosia, Iowa and in 1855 was married to Rev. Mr. Mitchell, who then was pastor of the Methodist Church at Albia, Iowa. In 1869, Rev. Mr. Mitchell was appointed presiding elder of the Sioux City district of the Methodist Church, which at that time included all of South Dakota and northwestern, Iowa and the family moved to this city to make their home. In 1873 the family left Sioux City and Rev. Mr. Mitchell served pastorates in the Algona district. In 1902, the family returned to Sioux City, making this their home until the death of Rev. Mr. Mitchell in 1922.

Mrs. Mitchell remained in Sioux City until 1924, when she left to make her home with her son at Mitchell, South Dakota. She was stricken seriously ill last Monday. Besides the son with whom she lived, she is survived by three sons, J.W. Mitchell, Talermo, North Dakota; D. J. Mitchell, Winona, Minnesota and Rev. C.B. Mitchell, Lake Mills, Iowa; one daughter, Mrs. Fannie E. Van Buskirk, Stockton, Missouri; 23 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Brief funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 o’clock this afternoon at the family home in Mitchell and the body will be brought to Sioux City Tuesday morning, where services will be conducted at Grace Methodist Church at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon Rev. H.E. Hutchinson, pastor of the church will conduct the services and the sermon will be preached by Rev. W.T. McDonald, a former pastor of the church.

Interment will be made in the family plot at Graceland Park Cemetery.
