War 2 Veteran Is Found Dead
Richard A. Shugart, Given Honorable, Served in Marines

Richard A. Shugart, 22, 1525 Douglas Street, a night clerk at the Sioux City Gas and Electric Company shop office at Dace Avenue and Iowa Street, was found dead in the shop office early Thursday morning by W. M. Weld, 4310 Garretson Avenue, also an employee of the company.

Mr. Shugart was born July 10, 1921, at Clinton, Iowa and was a graduate of the Melbourne, Iowa High School, where he was active in baseball and basketball. He enlisted in the marines in June, 1941 and was given an honorable discharge after being injured at San Diego, California. He was one of the first two veterans of the Second World War to join the American Legion here. He also was a member of the Methodist Church and the Marine league.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. LaDorris Shugart, Sioux City; his father, Ray E. Shugart of Melbourne; one sister, Colleen Bell Shugart Sioux City and his grandparents.

Coroner J.E. Swanson pronounced death a suicide as the result of shooting.

The body was taken to Manning’s Funeral Home.
