Patrick L. "Pat" Phipps, 57, of Sioux City died of complications from lung cancer Sunday, March 30, 2008, at his residence.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Christy-Smith Larkin Chapel, with the Rev. Daniel Anderson of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Visitation will resume 11 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Pat was born March 17, 1951, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Donald L. and Lodie Dean (Stout) Phipps. He was raised in the Charter Oak and Ute, Iowa, area. He graduated from Charter Oak-Ute High School in 1969. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1969 to 1972. He was stationed in Vietnam. Following his discharge, he lived in Denison, Iowa, before moving to Sioux City in the mid 1970s. He graduated from Briar Cliff College with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1981. He then moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1995, and returned to Sioux City this year.

He married Ruth A. on June 6, 1999 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was employed at the Sioux City Boys Club for close to 20 years. He then went to work for the AmeriStar Casino and Hotel as a executive host, then as a pit supervisor. He retired in 2007 because of failing health.

He was a member of AmeriStar Bikers. He enjoyed going to the Sturgis Rally. He liked to play golf and tennis. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan and liked to watch the Chicago Cubs. He also enjoyed camping occasionally. He collected candy machines. He was a passionate family man and loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He was willing to do anything for his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth A. Phipps of Sioux City; two sons and their girlfriends, Troy Phipps and Bobbie Losievski of Omaha and Travis Phipps and Kari Burnside of Sioux City; three stepchildren, Stacey and her husband, Brian Seylers of Sioux City, Hollie and her husband, Brian Fahrendholz of Sioux City and Jeremy Barrett and his girlfriend, Paula (Gullickson) Barrett of South Sioux City; five grandchildren, Jordan Phipps, Kennedy Phipps and Alissa, Ethan and Emily Fahrendholz; his stepmother, Bonnie Carlson of Ute, Iowa; and eight brothers and sisters and their spouses, Jim and Cindy Phipps of Omaha, Helen and Larry Riley of Yukon, Okla., Phyllis and Dale Boeck of Wellington, Colo., Mike and Janey Phipps of Fort Collins, Colo., Rick and Nancy Phipps of Tampa, Fla., Russ and Le Ann Phipps of Tallassee, Ala., Rhonda and Bernard Jester of Bivins, Texas, and Buddy and Theresa Huntle of Charter Oak, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, David Phipps; his stepfather, Jack Carlson; and a nephew, Corey Riley.

Pallbearers will be Matt Boeck, Josh Boeck, Jim Shields, Jeremy Barrett, Earl Schaub, Brian Fahrendholz, Donnie Phipps and James Fahrendholz.
