PIERSON, Iowa -- Gladys M. Mitchell, 88, of Pierson passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christian Church in Pierson, with the Rev. Jack Burright officiating. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery, rural Correctionville, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rohde Funeral Home in Kingsley.

Gladys was born May 26, 1920, in Moville, Iowa, to Ed and Ida (Rose) Myers. She grew up in the Moville area and graduated from Moville High School in 1938.

She married James H. Mitchell on Oct. 1, 1939 and over the next 41 years, they successfully farmed in the Kingsley-Pierson area. The couple raised three children, Sharon Shimitz of Sioux City, James of Tucson, Ariz., and Larry of Miami, Fla. In 1980, they sold their farm and moved to Pierson, where they enjoyed retirement and traveling for almost 20 years.

She was an active member of the Pierson Christian Church, serving as deaconess and Sunday School teacher for many years.

She is survived by three children; four grandchildren, Nancy Shimitz, Paul Shimitz, James Mitchell and Jesika (Mitchell) Olsem; and five great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Eva, Brandon, Astrid and the Toph.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; a brother; and her husband, James.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Christian Church in Pierson.
