Mrs. James Junk Succumbs After Short Illness
Here Before The Civil War
Was a Member of a Colony Which Settles in Dakota County in 1856—Had Made Her Home in Sioux City Since 1868

Death claimed one of the real pioneers of Sioux City, Mrs. James Junk, 207 Thirteenth Street, Sunday morning, at the age of 76. She had been a resident of Sioux City and vicinity since 1856 and was well known in this city and in northeastern Nebraska. She had been in poor health for nearly a year, but her condition did not become serious until a few days ago.

Mrs. Junk was born in 1847 in Tipperary, Ireland and came to this country with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Hogan at the age of 3. In 1856 her parents arrived in Dakota County, Nebraska, being a member of the St. John’s colony, new Jackson. The members of this band of pioneers came from Illinois under the leadership of Rev. Father Tracy.

In 1868 she was married in Sioux City to James Junk. She had lived continuously in this city since that time.

The surviving children are: George, Jane and Mary of Sioux City; Fred of Chicago and Edgar of Columbus, Ohio.

The funeral services will be held at the Cathedral of the Epiphany Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The body is at Kidd’s undertaking parlors.

Pioneer Is Laid To Rest
Funeral of Mrs. James Junk Held at Cathedral

Funeral services for Mrs. James Junk, 207 Thirteenth Street, a pioneer resident of Sioux City, who died Sunday at the age of 76 years, were held at the Cathedral of the Epiphany Tuesday morning at 9’o’clock. Rev. Gabriel Barry assisted by Rev. Patrick Casey and Rev. T.J. McCarty, officiated at the requiem high mass.

Bishop Heelan, Rev. A.E. Zimmerman, Rev. M.T. O’Connell and Rev. T.M. Coghlan were in the sanctuary during the services.

Rev. Father McCarty spoke briefly and paid a glowing tribute to the pioneers, in whose ranks Mrs. Junk belonged.

Interment was in Mt. Calvary cemetery. Rev. Father McCarty officiated at the grave.
