Sergeant Bluff—Guiles W. Green, 72, of Sergeant Bluff died Thursday, February 14, 2002 at his residence following a lengthy battle with bone marrow cancer.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff, with Dr. Paul Samuelson and the Rev. Sharon Cates officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Green was born April 2, 1929 in Oto, Iowa, the eighth child of Barney and Ethel (Benton) Green. He was raised in the Oto area. He married Betty Jean Barber on June 19, 1949, at Church of Christ in Oto. They made their home in Sioux City. They moved to Sergeant Bluff in 1963, where they have resided since.

He worked for Swift and Company for 37 years and retired when the company closed in 1985. He helped remodel the old Methodist Church into apartments before starting his own business, Green’s Remodeling and Repairs. In 1990 he worked for his brother-in-law to help establish Central Kitchen Supply in Sioux City, working there until the fall of 2001 when his health forced him to stop working.

He was an active member of Community United Methodist Church, where he held various offices throughout the years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and taking many vacations in his pick-up camper to see America. Along with being a loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa, he enjoyed gardening, growing roses and tomatoes, woodworking and remodeling. He loved to care for his home and yard and feeding the neighborhood squirrels was a favorite pastime.

Those left to cherish his memory with love include his wife; two sons and their wives, Guiles B. “Chip” and Debby Green of Sergeant Bluff and David and Mary Green of Emerson, Nebraska; a daughter and his husband, Debbie and Ray Schnell of Randolph, Nebraska; eight grandchildren, Amy and Bill Cadwallader of Lawton, Iowa, Tamie Rollison and Kenny Collins of Sergeant Bluff, Angie and Nick Mercer of Tarawa Terrace, North Carolina, Guiles (Bradley) Green of Sergeant Bluff, Jessica Green of Emerson, Nicole and Brian Berner of Belden, Nebraska and Eric Schnell and Sydnee Schnell, both of Randolph and three great-grandchildren, Garrett Rollison, Saige Mercer and Emily Cadwallader.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister.
