Former Westwood Principal Black Dies

Ed Black 1926 – 1991

Hornick, Iowa – Ed Black, 64, of Hornick, former area educator, died Thursday, September 19, 1991, at his home of an apparent heart attack.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Westwood Community School gymnasium in Sloan. The Rev. Karen Dearchs, of United Methodist Church in Hornick, will officiate. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery in Holly Springs. Visitation will be after 6:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Mr. Black was born December 25 1926, in Kingsley, the son of John and Amy (Kuhnhenn) Black. He graduated from Kingsley High School in 1946 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Westmar College in LeMars in 1951. He married Ruth Lowe December 26, 1951 in LeMars. He received his masters of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota in1957. The couple moved to Onawa in1954 where he was a teacher, girl’s basketball coach and boys football and track coach at West Monona Community School. He served as junior high school principal at Mapleton from 1962 until 1964. He had been elementary principal at the Westwood Community School from 1964 until 1987.

Mr. Black was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hornick. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Brad and his wife, Amy Black of Emporia, Kansas, a daughter, Becky of Des Moines; three brothers and their wives, Jack and Mick of Bella Vista, Arkansas, George and Marge of Merrill and Chuck and Evelyn of Cherokee, two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Knisley of Kingsley and Jean and her husband, Denny Anderson of Des Moines and two grandchildren, Bethany and Benjamin, both of Emporia.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
