Charles “Barney” Christman 1918 – 1989

Smithland, Iowa – Charles Lewis “Barry” Christman, 70, lifelong Smithland resident, died Thursday, May 11, 1989, in a hospital in Onawa.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Smithland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary DeGeest officiating. Burial will be in Smithland Little Sioux Township Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by Leslie F. Seaton Post 666, American Legion. A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. today in the Willman Funeral Home of Rodney.

Mr. Christman, was born October 8, 1918, at Smithland, son of Arthur and Gertrude (Lloyd) Christman. He farmed in the Smithland area and also worked at the Westendorf Manufacturing Plant in Smithland. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On November 4, 1974, he married Mary Drenkhahn at Elk Point, South Dakota.

Mr. Christman was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; one step-daughter, Kathy McHugh of Smithland; two step-sons, Ron Harbeck of Smithland and Richard Robinson of Indiana, a brother, George of Sioux City; two sisters, Nellie LaMonte of San Diego, California and Carol Jensen of Lawton; two step-granddaughters, Ginger Robinson and Jennifer Robinson and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Earl.
