A. Ellen Kelly, 80, of Smithland, Iowa, died Sunday, March 14, 1993, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting, Iowa.

She was born July 25, 1912, in Mullen, Nebraska, to Robert and Clara (Holt) Litster. On October 3, 1940, she married Eddie C. Kelly at Harlan, Iowa. The couple moved to Smithland in 1944 where they farmed Mr. Kelly died July 6, 1890, near Rodney.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Smithland and the United Methodist women. She was involved in many church organizations and activities.

Her special joy was teaching Sunday School for many years.

Survivors include; 2 sons, Howard Stanton and wife, Wilma of Canyon Lake, California and James Stanton and his wife, Carol, of Manteca, California; 1 daughter, JoAnn Haptonstall and her husband, Hap of Denison, Iowa, 2 sisters, Ruth Seaton of Sioux City and Elsie Phillips of Arkansas, 2 brothers, John Litster and Donald Litster and his wife, Velma, all of Hastings, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and over 50 foster children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 2 brothers and 4 sisters.

Services were held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, March 17, 1993, at the United Methodist Church at Smithland, Iowa, with Rev. Karen Dearchs officiating. The organist, Mrs. Ellen Harbeck, played the selections “Amazing Grace” and “When the Roll is Called up Yonder.”

Bearers were Neal Swearingen, Dennis Ronfeldt, Steve Ritchie, Paul Ritchie, Duane Clark and Gene Kelsey.

Interment was in Belvidere Cemetery at Turin, Iowa with arrangement by the Willman Funeral Home, Rodney, Iowa.
