Real Estate Dealer Succumbs At The Age Of 81
Residence Here Since 1890
Despite His Advanced Age, He Continued to Work at His Business Until Last Wednesday—
Funeral This Afternoon

Joseph Augustus Dean, a real estate dealer, died at his home, 1700 Grandview Boulevard, early yesterday of old age. He was 81 years old. He had been a resident of Sioux City for the last thirty years.

Mr. Dean was born at Tremont, Illinois, a village near Peoria, January 19, 1839. He spent his early life there and when at the age of 18 years went to Chicago, where he attended school.

At the outbreak of the civil war Mr. Dean enlisted in the One Hundred and Twenty-fourth Illinois volunteer Infantry and later was transferred to the Fifth United States colored heavy artillery, in which regiment he served as first Lieutenant and regimental quartermaster during the garrison of the city of Vicksburg, following the siege.

After the siege of Vicksburg hr obtained a leave of absence and returned to Illinois, where he married Augusta Cornelia Robinson, August 21, 1865. They returned to Vicksburg and lived there during the garrison period of nine months.

At the close of the war Mr. and Mrs. Dean removed to Leavenworth, Kansas, where they lived two or three years. In the fall of 1870 Mr. Dean drove with a team from Leavenworth to Storm Lake, Iowa. During the last day of his journey he did not see a human habitation, Mrs. Dean followed a short time later. They made their home in Storm Lake, where Mrs. Dean engaged in the banking and real estate business until 1890, when the family removed to Sioux City. They spent the remainder of their lives here.

Mr. Dean never retired from business and with an occasional exception was at his desk every day. He worked in his office as late as last Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Dean celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in August, 1915 on which occasion Mr. Dean wore the artillery uniform in which he was married. Mrs. Dean died on February 13 last year.

Mr. Dean is survived by one son, O.S. Dean and one daughter, Miss Eva Dean of Sioux City, a sister, Mrs. Emma A, Moore of Storm Kale and three grandchildren, Joseph Dean, Martha Dean and Rodney Dean all of Sioux City.

Funeral serviced will be held tomorrow.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon from the residence at 3:40 o’clock. Burial will be in Storm Lake.
