Verna JoAnne Davis, 87, of Sioux City died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at a Sioux City retirement center.

Private graveside services will be Wednesday in Logan Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. John W. Meyer, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. today at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Mrs. Davis was born March 31, 1911 in Sterling, Illinois, the daughter of John and Emma (Dauen) Landherr. She graduated from Sterling High School and received her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Iowa in 1932.

She married George F. Davis, a former District Court Judge with the State of Iowa, on August 21, 1937, in Sterling. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1937. He died May 21, 1992.

She was a social worker in Chicago, Illinois and then in Sioux City.

She was a past president and member of the P.E.O. Chapter LX Sisterhood and was previously involved in and on the board of directors with the Junior League, the Mary J. Treglia Community House and the Florence Crittenton Center. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a son and his wife, John F. and Miki of Anaheim, California; two daughters, Sue E. Preston of Sidney, Nebraska and Martha J. Davis of Santa Fe, N.M.; a sister, Helen K. Sharp of Rockford, Illinois; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin John Landherr.
