Jefferson, S.D. – Eldon Leon Baker, 75, of rural Jefferson died Monday, June 15, 1998 at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jefferson with the Rev. Andrew Swietochowski officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery at Sioux City, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Bert L. Smith Post 134 of Elk Point, South Dakota. Visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. today, with a Masonic service at 5 p.m. conducted by the Tyrian Lodge 508 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Visitation will resume at 7 p.m. today, with a parish wake service at 8 p.m. at the church.

Mr. Baker was born March 2, 1923 in Byers, Kansas, the son of W. Howard and Ruth (Taylor) Baker. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during world War II. He graduated from Morningside College.

He married Doris Corrine Hedlund on May 28, 1945. She died June 11, 1984. He then married LaVonne Chicoine Corio on October 4, 1986. He lived on a farm near Jefferson for many years. He was employed as an accountant with Metz Baking Company for 37 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, the Tyrian Lodge 508, the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, the Hospital Dads, the Sahib Unit and the American Legion Bert L. Smith Post 134. He was also a member of the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, the Senior Citizens, the Knights of Columbus, the Elk Point Dudes and Dolls Square Dance Club, the Elk Point Club and Hidden Acres. He was an avid golfer.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Curtis and his wife Vicky of Sioux City, Alan of Redondo, Washington and Kevin and his wife Rossie of Halewia, Hawaii, a step-son and his wife, Bob and Barb Corio of Jefferson; two step-daughters and their husbands, Angela Corio and Ken Smid and Terrie Corio and John Spike, all of Des Moines; two sisters, Arda Perkins of Ocala, Florida and Marlene and her husband Frank Koenig of Montrose, Colorado; two brothers, Marvin Vollmer of El Jon, California and Wayne and his wife Marge Mendenhall of Lemar, Colorado; two grandchildren, Michael Baker and Melissa Grase; a great-granddaughter and seven step-grandchildren, Kyle, Justin and Alex Corio, A.J. and Nicholas Spike, Jan and Antonia Smid.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Chuck Schoonover.

Pallbearers will be Gary Keiser, Pat Gross, Justin Corio, Michael Baker, Bob Korton and Ross Bryant.

Memorials may be directed to the Abu Bekr Shrine Transportation Fund.
