ROCK BRANCH, Iowa -- John Grant Sadler, 82, of Rock Branch, rural Correctionville, Iowa, died Thursday, July 21, 2005, at his residence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rock Branch United Methodist Church in rural Correctionville, with the Rev. Karl Harmon officiating. There will be a time of lunch and fellowship with the family following the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith McCulloch Chapel in Moville, Iowa.

John was born to Paul and Ethel (Hart) Sadler on Jan. 6, 1923, at Wayne, Neb. As a young child, in 1926, he moved with his family to the Rock Branch area onto the family homestead. He graduated from Correctionville High School in 1940. John continued his education at Iowa State College (now ISU). During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Infantry, spending the last year of the war as a first lieutenant paratrooper in the occupation army in northern Japan. He returned to Iowa State College in September 1946, graduating in 1948.

John married Dorothy Campbell of Anthon, Iowa, on Dec. 18, 1948, at Iowa City, Iowa. They made their home in the Rock Branch community, raising their eight children on the family farm.

He was a member of Rock Branch United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer and Sunday school teacher. He was a longtime member of the Farm Bureau, a former member of the Woodbury County Board of Review and Woodbury County Zoning Board. John enjoyed playing bridge but farming was his passion.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. Sadler of Rock Branch; two daughters, Sharon Sadler of Sioux City, and Carol Sadler of Atlanta, Ga.; five sons, Wesley Sadler of Omaha, Neb., Brian and JoAnn Sadler of Rock Branch, Steve Sadler of Kelly, Iowa, Merle and Jill Sadler of Parker, Colo., and Glen Sadler of Rock Branch; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Allen Sadler of San Bernardino, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son, Jay Sadler.

Memorials are preferred and may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or Rock Branch United Methodist Church.
