SLOAN, Iowa -- Arlene Louise Carter, 79, of Sloan entered heaven Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at her residence surrounded by her family.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Community Church of Christ in Sloan, with Dr. Emery Killian officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Albaton, Iowa. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Arlene was born May 2, 1926, in Sloan, the daughter of Wes and Louise (Harderson) Haakinson. She graduated from Sloan High School with the class of 1944. After graduation, she attended Cedar Falls Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She married James Carter on Nov. 24, 1950, in Sioux City. To this union a son was born, Gregory. James passed away April 22, 1967. She was a teacher in Blencoe, Iowa, then taught home economics at Horace Mann Junior High School in Omaha until retiring in 1987.

She was a member of Community Church of Christ. She was involved in many activities at the church. She enjoyed being the treasurer for Martha's Circle and wrote and edited the church bulletin for many years. She loved sewing, quilting, cooking and baking. She was full of energy and loved to make her family and friends happy.

Survivors include a sister, Shirley (Dale) Hewlett of Palm Desert, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Loretta Haakinson of Salix, Iowa; five nieces, Debbie (Tom) Templeton of Onawa, Iowa, Diane (Warren) Spencer of Salix, Iowa, Patricia (John) Moore of Garden City, Kan., Rhonda (Randy) Samson of Salix and Gretchen Hewlett of Santa Barbara, Calif.; 10 great-nieces and great-nephews; and nine great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; a son, Gregory Carter; and a brother, Harold Haakinson.
