Monica Helen Nielsen, 87, of Sioux City died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at an area nursing home following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Monica Helen Nielsen was born Oct. 19, 1917, in Sioux City, the daughter of Ben Saladonis and Helen (Tocko) Saladonis. She attended St. Francis Grade School and East High School.

She married Arnold Nielsen on July 1, 1939, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple lived in Sioux City all their lives. Arnold "Arnie" Nielsen died in 1979.

She was employed in many places in Sioux City including Physicians Optical, Martin's, St. Monica's Home, J.C. Penney's and nursing homes to name a few.

She was a former member of the Sioux City Policeman's Auxiliary and a volunteer for many years at the Heart Fund. She loved to grow flowers, read, sew and loved nature. She also had many pets over the years.

Survivors include a son and his wife, George and Lynne Nielsen of Desert Hot Springs, Calif. and Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Reba and Jim Browning of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren, Mary Browning, Nancy Browning, Dan Browning and his wife, MaryPat, Sandy and her husband, Matt Redding, LaNora Wessling, Samantha and her husband, Lawrence Scofield, all of Sioux City, Russell Wessling of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Angie and her husband, Kip Overton of Des Moines, Jennifer and her husband, Jeff Dunagan of Bellevue, Neb., Kari and her husband, David Weber of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Cindy and her husband, Tim Alvano of Sioux City; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Richard Arnold and Garry Keith; a daughter, Gail Braathen; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Nielsen; her mother, Helen Saladonis Kuchis; her father, Ben Saladonis; her stepfather, George Kuchis; a brother, George Saladonis; and a granddaughter, Michelle Nielsen.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
