Nelle C. Christman, 79, of Sioux City died Monday, June 8, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with the Rev. Lawrence McCarty officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 9 p.m., a rosary at 6:30 p.m. said by the Catholic Daughters of America and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Christman was born November 7, 1918, in Smithland, Iowa, the daughter of James E. and Tressa J. (Patterson) Heywood. She graduated from Smithland High School.

She married George W. Christman Sr. on February 20, 1937, in Oto, Iowa. She resided on a farm near Smithland for many years. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1960. She was employed as a cook at the Smithland School and later at Heelan High School. She was also a bookkeeper with several local businesses. He died December 14, 1992 in Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Rosary Society, the American Business Women and the T.O.P.S. Club.

Survivors include her children, Susan and her husband Davis Conyers of Omaha, Nebraska, David and his wife Sandra of Sioux City, George Jr. and his wife Patricia of Sioux City, Harold of Estherville, Iowa and Mary Sorenson of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, James and Addie Heywood of Tempe, Ariz., 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
