Thelma (Ward) Coffin, 91, of LaMesa, California, formerly of Sioux city, died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at the Grossmont Hospital in LaMesa.

Mrs. Coffin was born December 20, 1906 in York, Nebraska, the daughter of Rev. Hiram Owen and Etta Rosalia (Bain) Ward. She was raised in various communities throughout Northwest Iowa. She graduated from Plover High School in 1924 and from Iowa State Teacher’s College in 1926. She began teaching in New Providence, Iowa.

She married Owen Coffin on August 14, 1928. She resumed teaching in Sloan, Iowa in 1949. She later taught in Salix, Iowa and retired from teaching in Sergeant Bluff in 1972. The couple moved from Sioux City to El Cajon, California in 1977. He died in 1986.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Don and Lois of Mesa, Arizona and Joe and LaVon of Alturas, California; a daughter and her husband, Colleen and Richard Wenham of San Diego, California; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter; a grandson and a sister, Evangeline Kuhlman Taylor.
