BATTLE CREEK, Iowa -- John Hans Ketelsen, 66, of Battle Creek died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon, Iowa, with the Rev. Andrew Carlson officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Midway, rural Battle Creek, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Mumford Post 79 of Correctionville, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa.

John Hans Ketelsen was born Feb. 23, 1938, in rural Anthon, Iowa, the son of Jens and Viva (Parker) Ketelsen. He attended country school until entering high school in Anthon, where he graduated with the class of 1956. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. He was discharged in 1961.

He married Sharon Bollmeyer on June 1, 1962, in Anthon. She passed away Aug. 1, 1986.

He worked at various jobs including, the railroad and retired from Wilson's Food Service in Cherokee, Iowa, after 30 years of service. After his retirement, he worked for Anderson Construction, then in 2001, he and his brother, Mike, started their home repair business, "Sawsall Construction," which he still was doing at the time of his death.

He went into treatment and had been an active member of A.A. for the past 16 years. He was also very involved and held many offices with the United Food and Commercial Workers Union 179. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He loved tinkering with lawn mowers and other motors, making them run. His pride and joy were his grandchildren. He spent many hours with them, talking, teaching and loving them.

Survivors left to cherish his memories are his children, Jeff (Dawn) of Battle Creek, David Herm (Terri) of Sioux City, Chris of Correctionville, Iowa, and Michelle Ketelsen of Correctionville; grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, Cody, Jesse, Latrinda, Morgan, Austin, Kara and Dylan; brothers, Chris (Mary) Ketelsen of Anthon and Mike (Elaine) Ketelsen of Lawton, Iowa; and brothers-in-law, Gary (Becky) Bollmeyer of Correctionville, Ron (Deb) Bollmeyer of Gilmore City, Iowa, and Phillip (Lucy) Sanderson of Moville, Iowa.

Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Tina King and Lucia Sanderson.

Pallbearers will be Rod, Rusty, Rick and Randy Ketelsen and Fritz and Troy Putzier. Honorary pallbearers will be Alex Bollmeyer and Benny Ketelsen.
