Obituary of Mr. F.T. Smith
8 September 1855 – 18 May 1923

Franklin Thomas Smith was born in Smithland, Iowa in 1855 and died in Smithland at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R.W. Griffeth, May 18th at 9 A.M. age 67 years, 8 months, 10 days. On August 19th, 1880th was united in Marriage to Miss Leota Hawks, she having preceded him in death 7 years ago, August 26th, 1916.

To this union were born 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls, all of whom are now living to mourn his loss. The children are Merritt B. of San Luis Obispo, California, Frank H. of Ponca, Nebraska, Orrin W. and Charles L. of Bassett, Nebraska, Mrs. A.C. Baker of Dallas, S.D., Mrs. J.R. Leonard of Bassett, Nebraska and Mrs. R.W. Griffeth residing here. He was also survived by 4 sisters, Mrs. J.W. Adams of Smithland, Mrs. Helen Adams of San Juan, Texas, Mrs. T.J. Watson of Yokina, Washington and Mrs. Alice Beeker of Portland, Oregon.

Death was due to dropsy of the heart. The grief-stricken relatives have our sympathy in their loss. He was the son of O.B. Smith, founder of Smithland and from whose family our little city derives its name. Mr. Smith with his brother and sisters suffered many privations in frontier days and were friends of the Indians who inhabited this country. The old homestead was located near the present site of W.H. Cory’s home and in sight of the home of Mrs. Wallace Adams, one of the daughters. Funeral services were held at the house Sunday and interment made in the family lot at the Smithland Cemetery. This cemetery was given by his father many years ago to Smithland and the underbrush cleared off by the children to make it a suitable burial ground.

The many friends in attendance and the large floral offering attested of the sincere respect and the esteem which was held for him.
