ONAWA, Iowa -- Herbert N. Benjamin, 82, of Onawa died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Donald Smith officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary, at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Herbert was born April 21, 1923, at Onawa, the son of Thomas "Bert" and Edith (Messing) Benjamin. He attended Murphy Country School and graduated from Onawa High School. In July 1944, he joined the U.S. Army and was a rifleman in the 60th Infantry Company A. During World War II, he was in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns.

After his discharge in June 1946, he returned to rural Onawa, where he farmed until his retirement and then moved into Onawa. He had been a resident of Elmwood Care Centre at Onawa for the last five years.

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Beck of Onawa, and Helen Ryan of Blencoe, Iowa; a brother, Paul M. Benjamin of Onawa; and two sisters-in-law, Verla Benjamin of Onawa, and Berniece Benjamin of South Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Rev. Fr. George Benjamin, Maurice Benjamin and Tom Benjamin; a sister, Mary Benjamin; a brother-in-law, Royce Beck; and a nephew, Matthew Benjamin.
