Florence Skalovsky, 97, a former Sioux City resident, died Sunday, October 20, 1996 in Houston, Texas.

Services were Tuesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel with Spiritual Leader James Sherman of Congregation Beth Shalom and Rabbi Martin Hinchin, retired former rabbi at Mount Sinai Temple in Sioux City officiating. Burial was at Mount Sinai Cemetery.

Mrs. Skalovsky was born April 16, 1899, in Russia, the daughter of Solomon and Rachel (Miller) Kalin. She came to the United States and to Sioux City at age 14.

She married Nate Skalovsky in Sioux City.

She and her husband and brothers established and operated a dry goods store and a grocery store in Odebolt, Iowa. They also operated stores in other Iowa communities. They moved to Tucson 35 years ago. He died May 25, 1981 in Tucson and she moved to Texas a year ago.

Mrs. Skalovsky was a member of Mount Sinai Temple (now Congregation Beth Shalom) and Hadassah, while living in Sioux City. She was an avid bowler and bridge player.

Survivors include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Sol, Philip, Jake, Herman and Ben Kalin, and a sister, Molly Wolfe.
