SIOUX CITY | Joseph W. "John" Kunkel, 76, of Sioux City, passed away Friday, March 17, 2017, at a local hospital from a heart attack.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Joseph William "John" Kunkel was born Oct 23, 1940, in Sioux City, to Charles V. and Florence I. (Thompson) Kunkel. On July 25, 1965, he married Carol J. Mentzer in Ponca, Neb. Together they raised two children.

John started his career as a truck driver with Premier Trucking, then for Midwest Continental, Inc., and retired from Consolidated Freightway.

He was a member of the Teamsters Local Union. John enjoyed fishing and bowling. He loved old automobiles and restoring them.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; son, Joseph David Kunkel; daughter, Tracy and her husband, James Martin of Sioux City; grandson, Brandon Martin; and sister, Gladys Bates of Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister and her husband, Mary and Patrick Chinard.
