Ted was born on July 4, 1923, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Victor and Mary (Griesemer) Alvey. His parents moved to Sioux City in 1924. Ted attended Sioux City schools and graduated from Central High School in 1941. He married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Perazzo, on Oct. 23, 1944. To this union were born three children.

After graduating from high school, Ted spent three years as crew chief at the Sioux City and Pocatello, Idaho, Army air bases, maintaining the B17 bombers during World War II. After leaving the air base in 1945, he spent several years in the metal working industry, and then owned and operated a hardware store in South Sioux City. He sold the store in 1956, and then became superintendent of Modern Engineering Co. of Sioux City. In 1965, he founded Fabricators, Inc., an industrial metal fabricating company specializing in manufacturing equipment for the meatpacking, grain elevator and feed mill industries. He owned and operated Fabricators, Inc. for over 25 years before selling it to three of his employees several years ago; however, he remained active in the company.

Ted was a true entrepreneur, and was involved in many other business enterprises during the past 65 to 70 years. He and a partner founded Holly Industries in Holly Springs, Iowa, eventually selling his interest to his partner. He was president of Leverage Tools Co. of Glenvil, Neb., which was later sold to Stanley Tools, Co. He established USA Coin Co. Inc., of which he was president until selling it in 2007.

He was also president of The Gold Spot, LTD., which was located in Southern Hills Mall, a partner in P&I Coin Co., Siouxland Coin and Currency Co., E-T Cattle Co., and USA Realty Co. of South Sioux City. Ted was one of the original founders of Adventureland Theme Park in Altoona, Iowa, and he was a partner in The Brewery Night Club, serving as president for several years until it closed. He was partner with Dr. John Aiken in Sioux Veterinary Specialty Co. in South Sioux City, a partner in Martin Apartments in Sioux City, and a partner in Autumn Park Apartments in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Ted was a member of the downtown Rotary Club, and president and 40-year member of the Little Yellow Dog Auction Club. He served on the Tax Research Conference, was chairman of the Board of Adjustment for the city and a member of the Charter Commission. He served nine years as a member of the divisional board of directors of Marian Health Center (now Mercy Medical Center) and as liaison member to Hospice for Marian Health. Ted was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Church and served 10 years as lay director and lay minister.

Ted's interest in antique automobiles dated back to the 1930s. He was an avid collector of antique and classic cars. An equally great interest was U.S. and foreign coins and antique pocket watches. Ted was a longtime member of the Mercedes Benz Automobile Club of America, the 190SL Mercedes Group, the American Numismatic Association, and Central States Numismatic Society. In addition, he was a founding member, and president of the Siouxland Coin Collectors in the 1960s and '70s. Ted also enjoyed another hobby, repairing all types of items for his friends and family.

Ted is survived by Evelyn, his wife of 72 years; his children, son, Mark (Elaine) Alvey of Mt. Prospect, Ill., daughters, Karen (Gary) of Ankeny, Iowa, and Cheryl (John) of Santa Rosa, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Rev. Paul Alvey and Victor W. Alvey; and his sister, Geraldine Nelson.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials in Ted's name to St. Jude Children's Hospital or charity of choice.
