John Spakosky, 85, of Altoona, Wisconsin, formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, March 19, 1998 at Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Desert, California, following a brief illness.

Services were held Saturday, March 28, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, with the Rev. Eugene Klink officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery at Eau Claire. Prock-Beede Funeral Home of Eau Claire was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Spakosky was born June 23, 1912, in Slutsk, a providence of Minsk, Russia, the son of Pavel and Wladyslawa Shpakowsky. He immigrated with his family to the United States in July 1914 and settled in Sioux City.

He married Beulah Marie Smith on October 24, 1931, in Iowa.

He began his career in the insurance business in 1949. By 1959 he was an independent agent, owning agencies in Bloomer and Eau Claire, Wisconsin until retiring in 1981.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Gary and Lorinda of Palm Desert and David and Erlene of Brooklyn Park, Minn; three daughters and their husbands, Jean and Larry Schreiber of Sioux City, Lorraine and Peter Olson of San Francisco, California and Susan and Steven Gould of Eau Claire; 12 grandchildren, Terri, Mike, Greg, Sue, Laurie, Lori, Amy, Joel, John, Christopher, Nikki and Andy; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Stella LePay and Mary Little, both of Sioux City, a sister-in-law, Olga Shpakowsky of Sioux City, his special friend, Bev, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Adam; a sister, Bernice and a grandson, Steven.

Memorials may be directed to the donor’s choice.
