Margaret M. Phelps, 81, of South Sioux City died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Private family memorial services will be held. Burial will be in Sloan City Cemetery at Sloan, Iowa. Christy Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Phelps was born December 5, 1916, in Sloan. She graduated from Sloan High School and attended the University of Iowa.

She lived in Sioux City or South Sioux City most of her life.

She married Harold B. Hilts in 1935. He died in 1957. She married Marvin Phelps in 1960. He died in 1969.

She was employed in retail meat sales at the Corner Store for 25 years, retiring in 1971.

She was a member of the South Sioux City Eagles and enjoyed gardening, her pets and traveling.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Chilton of Sioux City; two sons, Terry Hilts and his wife, Cleo of Moville, Iowa and Thomas Hilts and his wife, Eua of Anaheim, California, seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert and two sisters, Kate and Elizabeth.
