NORTH SIOUX CITY | Donald Eugene Smothers, 74, of North Sioux City, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Merrill Muller officiating. A luncheon will follow.

Don was born on July 3, 1942, in Rodney, Iowa, to Donald R. and Erma (Morgan) Smothers. He grew up in the Hornick, Iowa area. The family moved to Sioux City when he was 12. He graduated from Central High School in 1960. He went to work for the Milwaukee Railroad for a few years before joining the U.S. Army. After being honorably discharged, he returned home to Sioux City, and went to work for Terra Chemical in 1967, retiring in 2000 after 33 years with the company. In retirement, he drove a school bus for the West Monona School District in Onawa, Iowa, and later part-time for the Dakota Valley School District in North Sioux City.

Hobbies he enjoyed were camping, fishing, hunting, playing cards, handball and racquet ball. He was a member of the Sioux City Elks Club and attended Riverside United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Troy Smothers of Sioux City; daughter, Stephanie Smothers of West Des Moines; granddaughter, Jessica Smothers and her fiance, Gunner Holbrook; great-grandson, Tanner Holbrook; brothers, Dennis Smothers (Janet) of Sioux City, and Dewain Smothers of Rochester, Minn.; three nieces, Kathy, Pam and Tammy; and his special friend, Nancy Hooker of North Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
