SIOUX CITY | Donald Wayne Small, 81, of Sioux City, passed away of lung disease Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, at his home, with his family by his side.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Don was born on April 20, 1935, in Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Donald E. and Eunice (McCrill) Small. Don attended Leeds High School and graduated from Central High School.

On Feb. 1, 1953, Don married Barbara J. Comstock at Calvary Lutheran Church in Leeds. Early on, Don worked as a buyer for Knapp and Spencer Co. Eventually, he went into the insurance business. He was truly a people person. After several years with American Family Insurance, he started his own company, Total Insurance, which he ran for many years until he retired.

Don loved motorcycling. He and Barb rode for 20 years through more than 20 states; Colorado was their favorite, they traveled there some 40 times. After it was too difficult to ride, they traveled by car, going to parks in several states and enjoying the wildlife. Even at home, Don fed all the deer that he would call out from the woods behind his house. Even naming them, they would actually eat out of the can of corn he held. Due to his illness, this past year he had been unable to feed them any longer. Don loved watching westerns, especially John Wayne, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Sioux City; three children, Dusty Small and his wife, Mary, Rick Small and his wife, Barb, and Robin Small, all of Sioux City; two sisters, Marlene Halbrook of Texas and Patty Scott of California; 10 grandchildren, Travis Small, Seth Small, Laeshun Kahler, Micki Gaswint, Mandy Hansen, Mindy Plummer, Mike Socci, Tim Turner, Shawna Smutzler and Jennifer Cornell; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be made in his name to all of the caring staff of Hospice of Siouxland, with special thanks to Rachel, Sheila, Denise and Bev.
