Peter Pumputis, 87, of Lincoln, Neb., former Sioux City resident, died Friday, Sept. 16, 2005, at a Lincoln hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Carmelite Monastery Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Monahan Post 64. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with a 3 p.m. rosary recited by St. Casimir's Rosary Society; a 7 p.m. rosary by Epiphany Council 743, Third Degree Knights of Columbus; followed by a chalice service by Garrigan Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus; and an honor guard during the evening services by Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, at Larkin Morningside Funeral Home.

Peter was born on Feb. 18, 1918, in Sioux City, the son of William and Amelia (Korsok) Pumputis. He was a lifelong resident of Sioux City until 2002, when he moved to Lincoln to live with his daughter and son-in-law. He attended East High School and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in China, Burma and India.

After the war, he returned to Sioux City and married Mary Ann Alelunis on Oct. 26, 1946, in Grand Rapids, Mich. Mary Ann died on June 17, 1989, in Sioux City. Pete worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad in Sioux City for over 40 years as a car man. He retired in 1978.

He was a former member of St. Casimir's Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus, Epiphany Council 743 and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Garrigan Assembly. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion, Monahan Post 64 and a member of the association of the men who served in China, Burma and India. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders and Helpers of America.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Frank Urzedowski of Lincoln; a sister, Sophie Williams of Sioux City; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, Joseph, Vincent and Leo; and a sister, Anne Redsfield.

A memorial has been established in his name for the Carmelite Monastery of Sioux City.
