Lucille Selma Hannel, 84, of Sioux City died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at Casa de Paz Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Kenneth Schmidt, pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. today and 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Lucille Selma Hannel was born Oct. 8, 1920, on a farm southwest of Galva, Iowa, the daughter of John E. and Emma M. (Fick) Koth. She was baptized and confirmed in Galva and lived on a farm with her parents, sister and two brothers. Lucille attended Galva public schools, graduating from Galva High School in May of 1938 as valedictorian of her class. She attended business school in Grand Island, Neb. from September 1938 to December 1940, graduating at the top of her class.

In April of 1941, she went to Washington, D.C. to work as a stenographer for the chief of the Air Corps in the War Department. In October of 1941, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa and then Chicago, Ill. before coming to Sioux City in October of 1945. She worked for two years as secretary for the president of Toy National Bank and one year for Connecticut General Life Insurance Co.

She married Clement Hannel on April 4, 1948, in Galva. Mr. Hannel died Oct. 27, 2004, in Sioux City. The couple had lived all their married life in Sioux City.

She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and was active in the church circles. Lucille enjoyed playing cards, traveling, her pets and sewing.

Survivors include a son, Richard L. Hannel and his wife, Carolyn, of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters-in-law, Lela Koth of Prairie Du Chien, Wis., and Marilyn Koth of Galva; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clement; a granddaughter, Teresa Hannel; two sisters, Agnes Koth and Nora Koth; and two brothers, Eldon Koth and Raymond Koth.

Memorials may be directed to the Big Sioux Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
