James W. Bauer, 89, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, at his residence.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Kingsley City Cemetery, Kingsley, Iowa, with military rites. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Mr. Bauer was born Nov. 1, 1915, in Sioux City, with the Rev. James B. and Mary (Adam) Bauer. He was a lifelong Sioux City resident. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed with the 27th Armour Division which captured the Ramayan Bridge. He received the Bronze Star Medal and the Silver Star Medal.

He married Helen Sivertson on Aug. 23, 1960, in Sioux City. He was a butcher by trade and was employed for 35 years at several meatpacking plants in Sioux City, the last being Meyer Beef.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a former member of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, hunting and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of Sioux City; seven children and spouses, Pam and Charles Pinson of Madison, Ala., Faye Self of Neosho, Mo., David and Carla Bauer of Bentenville, Ark., Jon and Juanita Bauer of Springfield, Mo., Douglas Lehman of Okoboji, Iowa, Susan and Dwayne Tevebaugh of Springdale, Ark., and Gary and Linda Lehman of Omaha; four stepchildren and spouses, Pat and Walt Morrow, who the family would like to thank for her help in caring for Jim, Richard and Nancy Lehman of Columbia, S.C., Janet and Dave Mowerly of Elko, Nev., and Don and Pam Lehman of Maui, Hawaii; a brother and his wife, Francis and Ethel Bauer of Pierson, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Dee and Vince Hvorka of Sidney, Neb.; 19 grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, James A. Bauer; his first wife, Virginia L. (Kemp) Bauer; his parents; six brothers, Alvin, Laurence, Chuck, Raymond, Kenny and Joseph Bauer; and a sister, Eileen Burns.
