Bernard P. McGarry, 85, of Sioux City died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be noon Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., followed by a Third Degree Knights of Columbus rosary, at Larkin Northside Funeral Home. The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand an honor guard at the funeral home starting at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Bernard was born May 18, 1920, in Anthon, Iowa, the son of Edward and Lula Mae (Cain) McGarry. He was raised in Anthon and moved to Sioux City as a teenager. He graduated from Central High School in 1936. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. During the war, six of the McGarry boys served in the Armed Forces at the same time.

On Oct. 25, 1941, he married Bernice M. Pakenis in Sioux City. Bernice died June 4, 1961, in Sioux City. On Aug. 18, 1962, he was married to Patricia C. Manning in Emmett, S.D. by Bishop Joseph Mueller, Bishop of Sioux City.

He worked at the Sioux City Country Club, the Warrior Hotel and the Joe Gantz Steak House. In 1951, he went to work for Williams TV and Appliance Store. He also became a partner in the ownership of the store with William Wobbema in 1951.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He served on the board of directors for Briar Cliff College and St. Casimir's Catholic Church. He was a member of the Sioux City Business Leaders Group and the Better Business Bureau. He was an avid Notre Dame University fan and enjoyed all sports and reading.

He is survived by his wife, Pat of Sioux City; three sons and their wives, Daniel and Georgette, Joseph and Kim and Kevin and Fran, all of Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands, Kathleen and Dennis Boyle of Palo Cedro, Calif., Shannon and Bill Carey of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Colleen and Jake Kemps of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Bryan and Jayme Boyle, Erin Wiswel, Brenna, Patrick and Kieran Carey, Angie Davis, Ryan, Meghan, Tim and Tara McGarry, Heidi and Bridget Kemps and Sean McGarry; five great-grandchildren, Brandon and Shawn Davis and Danny Fiona and Aidan McGarry; and three brothers, William of Franklin, Wis., Larry and Bonnie of Concord, Calif., and Jack and Wila Lou of Parris, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Dennis Michael; and four brothers, Leo, Donald, George and Jim.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Steen, Tim McGarry, Ryan McGarry, Tom Sweeney, Mike Sweeney and Roger Pitts.

A memorial fund has been established in his name for the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and for Trinity Heights.
