SIOUX CITY | Mary Josephine Taylor, 82, of Sioux City, joined her late husband, George, in heaven on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017, when she passed away at a local care center in Sioux City.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Bethel Baptist Church at 4212 Gordon Drive, with the Rev. Mark McGlohon officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home at 1801 Morningside Ave. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.christysmith.com.

Mary was born March 5, 1934, in Sioux City, to Raymond and Josephine (Mary Josephine Taylor. She graduated from East High School and then attended nursing school at St. Luke’s Hospital, where she worked for 35 years before retiring in 1993.

She married George Taylor on May 10, 1957, and the couple had five children, Ann, Dennis, Gwyn, Karen and Nancy.

Mary had many loves in her life, including her family, her church, her friends, traveling, fishing, and embroidery. Not one to stay idle, Mary volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, Casa De Paz, the Goodwill Auxiliary, and the Gospel Mission Auxiliary. She always had a smile and kind word for all those who came into contact with her. As one of her friends stated, "She was one of the most uplifting people that I have ever known."

Mary is remembered for being an avid student of the Bible and prayer warrior. She continually touched those around her by sending them birthday, anniversary, and other cards just to let them know she was thinking about them. She supported many Christian ministries and missionaries, many of whom she knew personally.

She is survived by her son, Dennis (Carol) Taylor of Le Mars, Iowa; three daughters, Gwyn (Ron) Bergthold of Nashville, Tenn., and their children, Cara, Cali, Carly and Caleb; Karen (Mark) Jones of Alexandria, Va., and their children, Austin and Valerie; Nancy (Randy) Boeshart of Kasilof, Alaska, and their children, Dustin and Samantha; seven great-grandchildren, Eden, Amelia, Kaitlyn, Silas, Melody, Kimber and Remi; two sisters, Geraldine (Wayne) Campbell of Sioux City, and Frances Person of Vancouver, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter, Ann Shari in infancy; and brother, Lewis Hicks.
