NORTH SIOUX CITY -- Richard G. "Dick" Cottington, 85, of North Sioux City died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kevin Lee officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Monahan Post 64. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Cottington was born Aug. 1, 1920, on a farm in Winnebago County, Iowa, the son of Levi and Gertrude (Gienap) Cottington. He graduated from Des Moines Tech High School, then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from the American Institute of Business with a bachelor of commercial science degree.

He married Janet Halverson on Jan. 16, 1944. To this marriage, three children were born, Linda, Randy and Lori. After 50 years of marriage, Janet passed away Aug. 4, 1994. He married Florence Prescott on May 17, 1997.

In 1949, he worked for Sears in Fort Dodge as an assistant manager. He came to Sioux City in 1953. He had a franchise in Sioux City with All Wheel Drive Co. for 27 years. He sold his interest in the company in 1977 and started McCook Mobile Estates. His son, Randy, joined him at McCook Mobile Estates in 1980.

He spent several years in the Planning and Zoning Commission in North Sioux City. He donated the land for the fire hall and community center in North Sioux City. He had been a member of Morningside Lutheran Church since 1954 and had served on the church council. He was building chairman for the building of the gym.

He was a 50-year member of the Morningside Masonic Lodge 615 A.F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite Bodies and Abu Bekr Shrine Temple. He was Potentate in 1981. He also was a member of the White Horse Mounted Patrol, the Flying Fez and High Twelve Club. He was a past member of the York Rite and the Royal Order of Jesters. He was past governor of the Shrine Hospital in Minneapolis.

Survivors include his wife, Florence of North Sioux City; three children, Linda and her husband, Kerry Killinger of The Highlands, Wash., Randy Cottington and his special friend, Jeanne Clay of North Sioux City and Lori and her husband, Ron Cliff of Polk City, Iowa; four brothers, Don, Bruce, Rex and Levi Cottington; three sisters, Gwen Rolland, Barbara Penquite and Marilee McAlpine; two grandsons, Matthew Cottington Miller and Benjamin Richard Cottington; a step-granddaughter, Sally Schulenburg; a stepdaughter, Diane and her husband, Norman Strait of Ute, Iowa; a stepdaughter-in-law, Marilyn Prescott of Sioux City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janet; his parents; three brothers, Keith, Dwight and Lyle; and two sisters, Gladys and Pauline.

Pallbearers will be Kenny Wright, Kent Hansen, Wayne Peterson, Scott Van Eldik, Shaun Sarff, Roger Spencer, Rich Porter and Norm Kronick. Honorary pallbearers will be Barney Hester, Darold Hamar, past Potentates and members of the White Horse Mounted Patrol of Abu Bekr Shrine.

Memorials in his name may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
