John Sexe Frantz, 83, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Craig Bock officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Persaud officiating, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.

John was born at Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City on Sept. 7, 1922. He was the last of four children born to John Edward and Helen Frantz. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church on Oct. 8, 1922. He attended confirmation classes there and was confirmed on May 6, 1935. He attended Cooper School, East Junior High School and East High School. He was on the varsity track team for four years and the varsity football team for three years. He was on the 1938 high school undefeated football team. He graduated from East High School at mid-year in 1941.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Sept. 16, 1942. He received the Good Conduct Medal. He was an aviation machinist mate second class. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Naval Air Force in January 1946.

He married Kathryn Ruth Speckman on July 12, 1947, in Sioux City. They had a daughter, Jana Lynn, and a son, John Edward. He worked at Sioux Tools as a tool and dye operator for 47 years, retiring in 1987.

He was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir and served on the church council. He was a member of the Nordic Male Chorus from 1947 to 2005. He enjoyed singing in the male choir as well as the social activities. He served as a board member of the Scandinavian Society. He was a member of the American Legion.

He loved to travel, dance, socialize with friends, watch his grandchildren's activities and participate in family holidays and activities.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Frantz of Sioux City; a daughter, Jana Lynn Phillips of Des Moines; a son and his wife, John Edward and Joy Frantz of Milwaukee, Wis.; a brother and his wife, William E. and June Frantz of Los Angeles, Calif.; three grandchildren, Amy and her husband, Matthew Willcockson, Scott Phillips and Elizabeth Frantz; and longtime good friends of 60 years, Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Dawson of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters.
