O. Burl Kieser, 96, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at a local nursing home.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Valerie Heller officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Burl was born March 6, 1909, in Wessington Springs, S.D., to Oliver and Desoline (Burchfield) Kieser. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1927. He graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D. He resided in Washington D.C. from 1936 to 1939, when he moved to Sioux City. He worked as a postal clerk for the postal service. He served during World War II in the U.S. Naval Air Corps from 1942 to 1945.

He met Viona Petersen and the couple were united in marriage on Sept. 23, 1943 in Chicago, Ill. After the war, he returned to Sioux City and the postal service. He became a supervisor in 1957 and later became the superintendent of the Morningside Station, retiring in 1973. Viona died April 20, 1980.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Morningside American Legion Post 697, Morningside Lodge 615 A.F. & A.M., Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, High Twelve Club and the Sioux City Scottish Rite Bodies.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Janet and John Uecker of Norfolk, Neb.; a daughter, Patricia Sabrina Warren of Sitka, Alaska; Opal Fish Kieser of Sioux City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Christy Schaller; his wife, Viona Kieser; and a sister, Frances Shuster.

Pallbearers will be Scott Uecker, Hay Uecker, Ron Post, Tim Graves, Amy Mace and Gary R. Fish.

Memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City, Viona Petersen Kieser Memorial Scholarship Fund at Morningside College or Oliver and Desoline G. Kieser Fund at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D.
